Trover Health System Calls for Blood Donors as it Prepares for Holiday Demand

December 2, 2009

Give the Gift of Life This Christmas

MADISONVILLE, Ky. — Trover Health System is asking Western Kentucky residents to donate blood this holiday season. Every day, 38,000 donations of blood are needed in the United States, and that demand is heightened over the holiday season.

“Traditionally, we see an increase in the need for blood over the holidays and this also is when we experience a decrease in donations,” said Trover Blood Bank Supervisor Linda Cansler. “At this time of holiday gift-giving, we want people to remember that the greatest gift one can give is the gift of life. By giving just one pint of blood, you can save as many as three lives.”

The blood donor program at Trover was established in 1961 and operates primarily on community and Trover staff donations. Trover uses approximately 350-450 pints of blood each month. Only five percent of eligible donors actually give blood in a given year. Eligible donors typically are those who are healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and have not donated blood in the last 56 days.

People interested in giving blood at the Trover Blood Bank can come to Trover Regional Medical Center Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. or call 270.825.5150 for more information. Additionally, there are several upcoming blood drives in the community:

Dec. 14 — Christ the King Church (4 –8 p.m.)
Dec. 16 — Dawson Springs Community, Clarkdale Court Community Room (2–6 p.m)
Dec. 17 — Madisonville YMCA (9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 3–7 p.m.)
