Glema Mahr honored for her commitment to health careFebruary 1, 2005Glema Mahr is this year's recipient of the Loman C. Trover Health Care Award.
As a wife to Merle M. Mahr, M.D., she was an avid and untiring supporter and was always by his side. For a busy physician, there is no more important role, and it had much to do with Dr. Mahr's success here. For that alone, Trover Foundation owes Glema a debt of gratitude.
Glema is a visionary. She and Dr. Mahr looked at some acreage on the north side of Madisonville, and she envisioned a working farm where they could persue their interest in horses and cattle. For the last 40 years, it has been a labor of love known as Hidden Hills Farm where Glema and Danny Peyton operate a successful cattle farm.
While Glema's roots did not start here, she adopted Madisonville as her home early on. She has been a loyal friend to the community. She has been active on both the YMCA and United Way boards. Glema has a true love for the arts, and she generously supports the Madisonville Community College fine arts center that now bears her name. She was instrumental in the coordination of the Madisonville Community College docent program, which now has over 150 volunteers.
Glema has been recognized by others for her generosity and hard work. She was named Kentucky Benefactor of the Year by the Council of Resource Development. She was recognized in Washington, D.C. as the Section 4 Benefactor of the Year covering eight southern states. Glema is one of only two Kentuckians to ever receive this honor. She was also named a Lions Club Woman of the Year.
Glema's support and generosity continue to this day. She has long been a friend of the Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center. When she visits the center, the staff calls her by her first name, and they invite her to meals on special occasions. This year, Glema took an extraordinary and generous step, bequeathing a portion of her estate to support the continued growth and improvement of the center. Future generations of cancer victims will receive compassionate and current cancer care from the Mahr Center as a result.
While we at Trover Foundation have been blessed by her friendship and unselfishness, it is truly the citizens of Madisonville and Hopkins County who have benefited and been enriched by Glema's interest and generosity. Back
